Components of a Funeral Service
No matter where it's held, a traditional funeral service is a structured ceremony, that usually will begin with a visitation or open casket viewing, a formal funeral service and then final disposition by burial at a cemetery at some point in time.
1. Viewing
This is often called a viewing or a wake. Guests will come to pay their respects by viewing the decedent and spending time with the family. A viewing may occur at any time before the funeral service.
2. Visitation
This is a period of time prior to a Funeral or Memorial Service at which time family and friends will gather to remember the decedent and express their condolences. If a casket is present it is not open for a viewing of the decedent.
3. Funeral Service
This event commonly takes place at the funeral home or a church. It may include music, the reading of literary or religious passages, a eulogy, prayer, and the singing of hymns.
3. Committal Service
This event is the actural burial or entombment of a casket or urn at a cemetery.
4) Memorial Service
This event is a service of rememberance which may be held at the funeral home, church, reception venue or at a residence.
5. Funeral Reception or Repast
Many choose to host this post-service gathering (or repast) at a reception hall. This is considered a time to share memories, laughter, and support.
