Walter Weldon Brittingham, Jr.
Former City Commissioner
Walter Weldon Brittingham, Jr., 82, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away on January 27th, 2026 at AccentCare Hospice - Newark.
Walter was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 6th, 1944, to Weldon and Betty Brittingham. His childhood started in Lewes, later moving to Rehoboth Beach. He graduated from Rehoboth High School in 1962, and attended college at Southern Technical Institute in Marietta, Ga. He later entered the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. Upon discharge, he returned to Delaware and worked in several family businesses, including Lewes Dairy Markets.
Walter was part of Mid-Atlantic Industrial and AVC, Inc. with friends Joe Wastler and Leonard Tylecki. Walter served the City of Rehoboth Beach as a City Commissioner, and was a proud life member of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company, holding many positions throughout the years.
Walter was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth “Betty” Brittingham, father Walter Weldon Brittingham, Sr., brother Henry “Hank” Brittingham, and spouse Joan B. Walker-Brittingham.
He is survived by his son, Andrew Brittingham (Ryan) of Rehoboth Beach and Wilmington; sister Suzanne Cowdery (John) of Iowa City, IA and Rehoboth Beach; and close friend Susan W. Smith of Rehoboth Beach.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life and Final Alarm on Saturday, February 21st at 12:00pm at Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company Station 1, 219 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.
Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Walt’s family suggests donations to Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company, 219 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971; and the AccentCare Hospice Foundation, 220 Continental Drive, Suite 407, Newark DE 19713.
