Sylvia J. Walker's Obituary
Sylvia J. Walker, age 81 of Lewes, DE, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Delaware Hospice Center, in Milford. Her unfailing kindness and compassion will be missed by all who knew her.
Sylvia was born in 1936, the first of three daughters, to William Allen "Skip" Hastings and Mary Jane Phillips Hastings of Seaford, DE. Raised on Arch Street, she was active in both church and school. Sylvia played piano for the MYF at Mt. Olivet Church and sang in the high school choir. She somehow managed to be a varsity cheerleader for 4 years, while also playing the Baritone in the high school band, making football games a real challenge. Sylvia graduated in 1954 and attended Goldey-Beacom Business School the following year. In 1955 she married Sidney Walker, and they began their family.
While raising her children, Sylvia remained active in her community. She spent many happy Saturdays working with BSSP (Bible School for Special People) at Christ Lutheran Church, bringing music and prayer to handicapped children and adults. Sylvia was a school secretary in the Seaford School District for many years, retiring in 1998 when she took the opportunity to relocate to Rehoboth Beach. There she became a founding member of the Praise Team at Epworth Methodist Church, where she sang with great joy and often offered the prayers and concerns. Above all, she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She will be deeply and genuinely missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her step-father, Eugene James Miller; her beloved husband of 31 years, Sidney Walker; and her precious sister, Margaret H. Hastings. She is survived by her children: Dennis Walker (Terry) of Hebron, MD, Diana Irvine (Rich) of Seaford, DE, and Glen Walker (Karen) of Falls Church, VA; her grandchildren: Jenny Walker Bailey, Aaron Irvine, Trevor Irvine, Megan Walker Joseph, Shannon Irvine, and Amalie Wren Walker; her great-grandchildren: Quinn Bailey, Evie Bailey, and Jolie Joseph; her sister, Carole H. Carpenter of Milford, DE; and her niece, nephews, and cousins.
At Sylvia's request, there will be no public services. The family will gather in remembrance at a future date.
