Shirley Irene Avery's Obituary
Shirley Irene Avery, 70, of Bridgeville, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 23, 2026. Born on August 19, 1955, in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, Shirley lived a life defined by selflessness, strength, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.
Shirley was the heart and glue of her family — a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and a nurturing presence to all who knew her. She was known for her tireless work ethic, kind spirit, and simple but powerful philosophy: she never said no and always said yes. Her home was a place of warmth, comfort, and belonging, where family and friends were always welcomed with open arms.
Shirley found joy in cooking, caring for animals, spending time at the beach, being outdoors, and, most of all, hosting and gathering with her family. Through her nurturing nature and constant care for others, Shirley shaped generations with love, kindness, and quiet strength.
Shirley was married to Douglas E. Avery and spent many years working at duPont before operating her own self-employed cleaning business. In every role she took on, she gave her full heart and dedication.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Douglas E. Avery of Bridgeville, DE; her children, Douglas W. Avery Sr. (Brandi Avery), Christina Avery Condon (Richie Condon), Heidi Cormier, Amy Lee, and Leslie Ann; her grandchildren, Douglas W. Avery Jr., Hayden M. Avery, Tyler Wells, Ashley Lydick, Kaylee Cormier, Julio Toro, and Kaleb McClellan; her siblings, Leslie Stroud, Melody Stockman, Valerie Bothelo, Wendy Hatton, and Sandra McKenzie; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Lester Hatton Jr. and Shirley Pinkston; her son, Douglas E. Avery Jr.; and her grandson, Kyle Avery.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 202 South Laws Street, Bridgeville, Delaware 19933. A viewing will take place from 10:00–11:00 a.m., followed by the service from 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
