Richard M. Garry's Obituary
It is with great sadness that the Garry family announce the passing of Richard Martin Garry, age 86, of Millsboro, DE, formerly of Union, NJ. He passed away on December 6, 2024, in his sleep at home after battling a long illness.
Richard, fondly known as Rich or Pop, was born to Andrew F. and Mary J. Garry (nee Deutsch) on May 8, 1938, in Elizabeth, NJ. He leaves behind his loving and adoring wife of 62 years Camille M. Garry (nee Sammartino); two cherished children, Richard Garry, Michelle Poulos (nee Garry) and son- in-law, John S. Poulos of Roselle Park, New Jersey; two endearing grandsons, Michael P. Donoughue and Aleksandar Poulos; a niece Lynn Blaney, and a grandniece Blaine La Mort. He also leaves behind his two faithful dogs Bebe and Benny. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Andrew F. Garry; his sister Patricia E. Soja (nee Garry); his twin brother Robert M. Garry, and nephew Andrew F. Garry.
Richard grew up in Elizabeth, NJ, graduated from Jefferson High School, and attended Newark School of Fine Industrial Arts. He then became an Elizabeth Police officer, where he worked for 25 years, first as a patrolman then as a detective. After retirement he became a school bus driver for Vogel Bus Company and an attendance officer for the Elizabeth Board of Ed. He was a member of the National Fraternal Order of Police Sussex County Lodge No. 2.
Richard had a passion for art and history. You could always find him practicing his drawings on anything he could find from napkins, placemats, notebooks to canvases. He took classes at the Arts Student League in NY and then later at the Rehoboth Arts League. Richard’s work has been published in newspapers, street signs, t-shirts and in a book. He loved to read about art and wars, especially WWII.
Richard’s greatest love was spending time with family, whether it was vacationing at historic places, going to the beach, or taste testing a new dish from his wife. He loved to play with his grandsons and spend time with his dogs.
Richard touched the lives of many. He was known for being kind, generous, and a protector. He was always looking out for everyone’s well-being whether it was a family member or not.
Despite being in and out of the hospital over the years, Richard kept his sense of humor with all who helped him. But, sadly, on December 6, 2024, he lost his battle with Lewy Bodies and was summoned by the Lord to serve and protect. His spirit, like a beacon of hope, will continue to guide us in the darkness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Mary Mother of Peace 30839 Mount Joy Road Millsboro, DE 19966 where friends and family may begin visiting at 10:00 AM.
