Pamela K. Sutherland's Obituary
The world is less sparkly today than it was before. Pamela K. Sutherland, a gifted attorney, passionate defender of social justice, indefatigable supporter of democratic ideals, and a truly unique style icon, passed away 8 May 2026.
From her early days, Pamela put her heart, her soul, and her material self into the causes that moved her: long-shot Democratic and Independent candidates, up-and-coming artists, horseshoe crabs, and young people approaching adulthood with limited access to rigorous education opportunities or consistent support systems. Among her final projects was working as a substitute social studies teacher in the public school system of Lewes, DE. Her support for jewelry artists was particularly notable, evidenced in the spectacular and always unique pieces she wore.
With her early law partner Linda Jurgenson, she drafted the guidelines that the American Psychiatric Association adopted to define sexual misconduct between psychiatrists and their patients. She later moved to Tucson, AZ, where she brought her vision for healthy, diverse communities to development projects with her then-husband Philip Lipman; she co-founded Arizona List, Arizona’s version of the Democratic leadership development organization Emily’s List, and took on leadership roles with the ACLU of Arizona. The fundraising events she hosted there became the stuff of legend. When she moved back east to Washington, DC, she sought out performing artists and continued her work campaigning for positive change through political action. She was deeply troubled by the recent challenges to civility and coherence in local, national, and international politics, taken especially aback by inconsistencies and in international policies, discourse, and interventions. Her move to the Delaware shore was motivated in part by a desire to step away from Washington’s heated and ever-more partisan climate. In Lewes she delighted in morning walks on the beach with her beloved Bouviers and the annual census of the horseshoe crabs.
Her father Earl W. (Bill) Sutherland, stepmother Judy Gilbert, brother David, sisters Erika M. and Moira, aunt Annie, brother-in-law José G. Cooper, and too many friends and colleagues to name will miss her sharp sense of design, sharper intellect, and beyond-sharp verbal skills. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her or were touched by her many passions.
