Michael Kardash's Obituary
Michael Kardash, age 97, of Rehoboth Beach, DE passed away on January 13, 2016. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Mike was a former professional baseball player and scout, and a World War II veteran who fought in the battle of Leyte Gulf. He graduated from Washington College in Chestertown, MD in 1941 where he was an outstanding baseball and basketball player. Mike was named to the Baltimore Sun’s All Maryland teams for both sports, and won four consecutive Maryland Collegiate League baseball and basketball championships. Mike was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 1982.
After college, Mike signed a contract and played for the Baltimore Orioles among other pro clubs. In 1943, he joined the Navy, and served aboard the Australian cruiser the HMAS Shropshire in the Pacific theatre. In 1946, Lt. (jg) Kardash was honorably discharged and returned to professional baseball as the manager of the Tarboro Tars.
In 1961, he served as President of the Maryland Professional Players Association. In 1986, he was indicted into the Maryland Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame. The Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him in 1997, and in 2009 the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame.
He was fond of golf and a member of Rehoboth Beach country club for over 50 years. Mike was a 3 time club champion and he won the Delmarva Peninsula Amateur Golf Championship in 1975.
Mike, along with his wife Eleanor, were two of the founding members of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach and was very active in the church throughout his life.
Mike is survived by his wife of 75 years, Eleanor Kardash, a son, Robert of Rehoboth Beach, a daughter-in-law, Janis of Wilmington, DE; four grandsons, one granddaughter and five great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son Thomas and four brothers.
Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at 11:00 AM, at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 20276 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971, where friends may visit beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Mike's memory to the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 7 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 or to Compassionate Care Hospice of Delaware, 5610 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.
