Matthew John Coffey's Obituary
Matthew J. Coffey, age 69, of Lewes, Delaware, passed away on April 20, 2024, shortly after a diagnosis of gastric cancer.
Born on February 24, 1955, in New York, New York, to the late Matthew and Joan Coffey, Matt was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Valerie, his high school sweetheart, whom he married on November 13, 1976, in Copiague, NY. Together they shared a lifetime of love and memories.
Matt was a loving father to his children, Tricia and Matthew, and their spouses, Jason and Cristina. He adored his four grandchildren, Angelina, Christopher, Matthew, and Alexander and spoiled them with love and affection.
Professionally, Matt retired from the USPS after working many years as a mechanic, but his expertise was not limited to his profession. He worked tirelessly to renovate every home he owned, and he selflessly dedicated himself to helping others do the same.
When he wasn’t working, Matt had an interest in cars and music. In quieter moments, he could be found playing one of his many guitars, but he was often at the center of social gatherings with family and friends, where his stories filled the room and brought joy to those around him. He had a quick wit and a contagious sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him.
In addition to his immediate family, Matt is survived by his sister Cathy and her husband Ed, as well as his in-laws Angela, Theresa, Steven, and Michael, their spouses, and his nieces and nephews, who were dear to him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 152 Tulip Dr #1689, Lewes, DE 19958, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Matt’s memory to the Gastric Cancer Foundation, https://secure.frontstream.com/gastriccancer/participant/NickFox.
Rest in peace, Matt. You will always be remembered with love and affection.
