Martin A. Schagrin's Obituary
Martin Allen Schagrin died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, May 22, 2026. Martin was born on June 18, 1938, to Isadore and Nettie Schagrin in Chattanooga, TN. He and his parents moved to Wilmington, Delaware, when Martin was a child, and this is where he spent most of his life.
Martin graduated from P.S. du Pont High School, where he enjoyed playing a variety of sports. He then attended Tulane University for his undergraduate studies, making the basketball team as a walk-on. After graduating in 1960, Martin earned his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law. He then returned to Wilmington to begin his legal career.
Martin worked as a Deputy Attorney General in the Delaware Attorney General's Office for several years before co-founding the firm Berkowitz, Schagrin, Coonin and Cooper. Specializing in criminal defense and personal injury, he enjoyed a highly successful career. An avid outdoorsman, Martin spent much of his free time boating, golfing, and cycling. He was also a passionate fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles.
Martin met Carole Shaver at a charity golf event, and the two married in September 1988. They loved spending time together in Rehoboth Beach while maintaining their primary residence in Wilmington. As members of the Wilmington Country Club and the Rehoboth Beach Yacht and Country Club, they spent many happy hours on the golf courses. They also shared a vibrant social life and loved dining out frequently.
When Carole suffered a stroke in 2016, their lives changed dramatically. Martin became a devoted caregiver, doing everything possible to keep Carole active, social, and happy. He was an exceptional husband who always put her needs first, providing unwavering care until her passing in 2025. He was truly devastated by this loss.
Martin was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carole Shaver Schagrin. He is survived by his two stepchildren, William Robert Adair, Jr. and Robin Adair Harvey, and their spouses, Mary Beth Adair and E. Thomas Harvey Ill.
Martin will be laid to rest alongside Carole at St. George's Chapel Cemetery, 20271 Beaver Dam Road (Route 23), Harbeson, DE 19951. Family and friends are invited to attend the graveside service on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
