I met Marty in 1970 when I was clerking for a Wilmington law firm. I had applied to be a Deputy Attorney General where I was assured that I would quickly gain trial experience. Marty had been admitted to the Delaware Bar on December 16, 1969 and was employed by the Attorney General. Based on what I considered his vast experience, he confirmed that if hired I would get trial experience.
About a year later when I was employed as a Deputy Attorney General I was assigned to “observe and follow” Marty during criminal prosecutions in the Court of Common Pleas.
After several hours of watching Marty prosecute, he asked me to interview a police office who had charged a driver with a traffic offense. I interviewed the police office, took careful notes and reported back to Marty to go over what he could expect the officer to say. He held up his hand and instructed me to wait a few minutes. About 10 minutes latter when the Clerk called the case about which I had interviewed the officer, Marty addressed the Judge “Your honor this matter will be handled by Deputy AG, Tom Whittington.” I was stunned, but thanks, mostly to the officer, the prosecution was successful. Later when I threatened to strangle Marty, he laughed and said, “I told you that you would get trial experience.” He teased me about my first court experience over the years.
Despite working in different areas of the law Marty and I were friends for over 50 years and I will miss him. My condolences to his family and friends.

So sad to hear of Marty’s passing as well as Carol’s . I live in Wilmington & They both were lovely people who often sat at the restaurants I bartended part time at. Both so gracious & friendly, we got to know each other well, when they retired to the beach I lost touch with them & wish to express my condolences to their family. Such a great couple! 😘🥰😢🙏😇😇
