Marie Wik's Obituary
Marie Pedersen Wik, 91, of Lewes, DE passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2015. She was born in Mandal, Norway on the 3rd of April 1923 to Jenny Storaker and Daniel Pedersen. She graduated from West Orange High School in New Jersey and attended many courses in the field of banking and finance. While engaged in a successful 40-year banking career, beginning at the First National Bank of West Orange and ending at Bank of America, she partnered with her husband John C. Wik in founding the Wik Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1970. After enjoying a retirement that began in Woodbury, Connecticut in 1983, Marie and John moved to Lewes, DE in 1994.
Marie and John were active members of many organizations. While residing in New England, they were life members of the Old Woodbury Historical Society, the Menunketesuk Yacht Club, the Waterbury Club, and Mystic Seaport. In Lewes, together they supported the Cannonball House Museum as docents and the Lewes Historical Society. Marie enjoyed continued involvement with the Ocean Waves Quilting Guild and Republican Women’s Club. Marie and John loved to entertain friends and family in a relaxed style of warm hospitality. Together they relished vacationing in Bay Head, New Jersey, sailing from the Pilots Point Marina on Long Island Sound, traveling to Norway, and walking on the beach at Cape Henlopen in Lewes.
Marie was a strong, independent woman who had many interests over a full life—she was an excellent quilter and remarkable seamstress, she looked forward to walking with great friends every Friday morning, was well known for her home-baked cookies and fig jam, remained always faithful to the Presbyterian Church and, along with John, was a wonderful grandparent to five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
Survivors include her children, daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Steve Harding, and son and daughter-in-law John and Beverly Wik; grandchildren, Anna Wik, Warren Wik, Stephanie Harding Bryant, Weston Harding, and Lara Wik; great-granddaughters Avah Wik and Pippa Kane; sister and brother-in-law Doris and Turner Talaksen. Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years John C. Wik.
A private burial will be in Lewes Presbyterian Church Cemetery with a memorial service to be held later in the spring for family and friends.
