Leland S. Jones' Obituary
Leland "Lee" Sherwood Jones passed away early Sunday morning, April 18th, 2010 in the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.
A resident of Rehoboth Beach, he was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on April 10, 1930, son of the late John G. and Inez (Harmon) Jones.
A charter member of AFRA, the American Federation of Radio Artists (now known as AFTRA, the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists) in Portland, Oregon, he began his career as a teenage radio actor in the 1940s. He majored in Theatre Arts at the University of Southern California and following two years of Army service during the Korean Conflict, moved to New York City where he worked as an actor, writer, producer and director on stage, film, TV and in business theatre. He owned his own company, Lee Jones Associates, for many years prior to his retirement in Rehoboth Beach in 1996.
Lee was an active retiree. He served on the founding board of the Rehoboth Beach Film Society, was appointed to the board of the Delaware Humanities Forum by then Governor Ruth Minner, served on the board of his home owners' association in Eagles Landing, was co-chair of the Rehoboth Art League Cottage Tour from 2008 through 2009, and was active in the Sussex County League of Women Voters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carol D. Jones; three children, Kevin and his wife Karina Golden of Bowie, MD, Gary of Ashburn, MD, and Christina Ingram and her husband Charles of Lynchburg, VA; five grandchildren, Corey McGahan Gilbreath, Kiley McGahan, Darryl, Hannah and Christopher Jones; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Phillip.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 301 King Charles Avenue, Rehoboth Beach on Saturday, May 22nd at 2:00 PM., with his pastor, The Rev. Dr. Frank S. Deming officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Lee's memory to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford DE 19963 or to the Rehoboth Beach Film Society, 107 Truitt Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
