John B. Strauss' Obituary
John B. Strauss, age 68, of Millsboro, DE, formerly of Ringoes, NJ, passed away on Easter morning, April 16, 2017 after a courageous battle with a sudden illness. He was born in Easton, PA, on Monday, June 14, 1948, the only child of the late John and Olive (Frankenfield) Strauss.
John worked in several different career fields as an elementary school teacher and school bus driver, but his true passion and calling that he found his niche in was Emergency Services. He was a retired Supervisor of the Hunterdon County Communications (911). He served the community as Coordinator of East Amwell Office of Emergency Management, Deputy of Hunterdon County Office of Emergency Management, Captain of the Milford Fire Company and Rescue Squad and Chaplain of the 10th District First Aid Council. He was also a member of the Flemington-Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad and Officer of the Amwell Valley Ambulance Corps. John’s passion and dedication toward emergency services led both of his sons to volunteer and serve in leadership positions within local rescue squads as well.
John married his best friend and companion, Barbara Rusin on August 5, 1972. They met as teachers at Frenchtown Elementary School. The two spent over 40 years in Ringoes, NJ before moving to Millsboro 2 years ago to enjoy retirement close to the sea. John was a dedicated, family-oriented selfless man who could only be described as a loveable gentle-giant.
In retirement, John enjoyed his position as a Courier for Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, NJ. This allowed him to do one of the things he loved best; to have the opportunity to chat with everyone along the way. John will be remembered for making Sunday morning breakfasts, his grand collection of lighthouses and recording NASCAR races off of the TV. In his spare time, he enjoyed visiting local food trucks, reading, dirt track racing and watching the live shows and competitions of the Drum and Bugle Corps. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren who he was always in on the action with. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Strauss was survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Barbara (Rusin) Strauss; his two sons of whom he was immensely proud and two daughters-in-law he treasured, Jason and Cynthia of Lambertville, NJ and Judd and Shannon of Collegeville, PA; and his three grandchildren who lovingly called him "Opa" that were his pride and joy and lights of his life: Madison Leigh, Connor Jude and Patrick John.
A Memorial Service and Luncheon will be held on Saturday April 29, 2017 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance & Rescue Squad Banquet Hall, 70 Alexander Avenue Lambertville, NJ 08530.
