John Walter Liska's Obituary
JOHN WALTER LISKA (age 87) died peacefully at home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on Sunday, September 14, 2014 after an extended illness. He was born on February 11, 1927 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father was an officer in the Czechoslovak Foreign Service. As a result, John’s childhood was spent in Pittsburgh, Prague, Czechoslovakia, Cleveland, Chicago and Washington, D.C. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C. He attended George Washington University for two years, then the Technical University in Prague, and graduated from George Washington University with a degree in Business Administration following service in Korea while in the U.S. Army.
He retired in 1987 from Safeway Stores, where he had worked for 37 years. He started there as a “bag boy” and ended his career as Retail Operations Manager in the D.C. area. He was also a Seasonal Ticket Holder and an avid fan of the Washington Redskins for over 55 years.
He had a home in Bethesda, Maryland and one in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he lived for the past thirteen years. He never married, but was a devoted son, brother, uncle and cousin to his family and a caring person to all his friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jan and Ludmila Liska, his younger sister, Olga Cannon (Kenneth), and his brother-in-law, James Herd. He is survived by his older sister, Ellen Herd, his brother-in-law, Kenneth Cannon, his seven nieces and nephews, Lydia, Leslie, Paula, Anne, Susan, John and Kenneth, as well as cousins in Connecticut, Prague and Slovakia.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Compassionate Care Hospice Services, specifically Nancy, Michael, Allison, and Emmy; to Griswold Home Health Care, specifically Carolyn, Al, and Sarah; and to Tammy’s Helping Hands, specifically, Tammy and Katrina. All worked together to ensure a comfortable and peaceful ending to his illness.
All services are private.
Per John’s wishes, the burial will be private. Memorial donations in his name can be made to Compassionate Care Hospice Sussex Division, 5610 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808 or to a charity of your choice.
