Irene E. Hazzard's Obituary
Irene Gooner Hazzard went home to be with her Lord on May 29, 2017. She was born in Angola, DE on October 11, 1922, first child of Harry and Nellie Burton Hazzard. The family moved to Lewes one year later where Irene was raised and graduated in 1940 from Lewes High School. She later went on to graduate in 1986 from the University of Delaware with her Associate Degree in the Arts. She was a registered medical lab technician with Beebe Hospital during the year of 1962, and from 1978 to 1996. She also was a tech at the Stockley Center from 1963 to 1982.
Irene was a professional musician and played piano at many churches, and accompanied various junior and senior choirs. She enjoyed volunteering at The Cheer Center as well as other places and was an avid crocheter, thus permitting her to donate her many blankets to charity. She was an associate member of International Society of Clinical Lab Technologists, and the Order of the Eastern Star , Unity Chapter #16, of Lewes. Irene was a faithful member of Groome United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir and was the organist for many years. Her presence will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her children, Mary Kay and Wayne Billings of Middletown, DE, W. Richard Gooner of Milton, Randy Gooner of Georgetown, DE and Rodger Gooner of Nassau, DE; five grandchildren: Randy Lee Gooner, Jennifer Gooner, Brent Billings, Roger Gooner and Dana Marie Gooner; six great grandchildren: Elizabeth Skye and R.J. Gooner, Edward Nelson Buckley, III, Riley Nicole Barto, David Maker, Jr. and Aries Irene Gooner.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will follow the services at Conley's Chapel Cemetery, Angola, DE.
In lieu of flowers contributions are suggested to the Beebe Medical Center Foundation, 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
