Gilbert E. Holt's Obituary
Gilbert E. Holt, Sr., age 62, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 20, 2011 at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE. Mr. Holt was born July 22, 1949 in Milford, DE, son of the late Gilbert Tyler and Laura (Holson) Holt.
Gilbert began his career with the Lewes Board of Public Works on Feb. 21, 1971 and retired on Feb. 28, 2011 in the position of Power Plant Supervisor/GIS. His contributions during his lifetime to many local service organizations will be sorely missed. Those service organizations include being an Honorary Member of the Lewes Volunteer Fire Department and member and past president of the Lewes Lions Club. For many years he was president of the Lewes Little League where he was instrumental in getting girls involved with the Little League Program. After his tenure with Little League he took a position on staff with District 3 Eastern Regional Little League where he handled scheduling of tournaments and also served on the Senior Softball World Series Committee for District 3. Following his involvement with Lewes Little League a T-Ball Field was built and named in Gilbert’s honor.
His involvement with the Punkin Chunkin Association began during its early years and utilized his abilities as Sergeant of Arms, Parliamentarian, and as Head of Security for their events. When Articles of Incorporation in 1999 were filed, Gilbert became one of the original officers and had been the longest standing officer in service of this organization for its entire history.
Gilbert chaired the Old Fashion 4th of July on 2nd street in Lewes for many years including this past July. In his spare time he was often found down at the Docks at Lewes and was affectionately known as a "Dock Rat."
However, his most famous notoriety was serving as Santa Claus in the Lewes area, a position which he held from the 70's until 2005.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife Josephine Norma Hill Holt on Dec. 26, 2007.
He is survived by his two sons: Gilbert Edward Holt, Jr. and wife Vicki of Nassau, DE and Geoffery Tyler Holt of Rehoboth Beach; his daughter Gloria Holt and spouse Susan of Lewes; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sister Sherri Kincaid and husband David of Rehoboth Beach, DE; and a niece Lorie Dorey and husband Keith of Millsboro, DE.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday Dec. 27, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE where friends may call one hour prior to services. Friends may also call at the funeral home on Monday evening Dec. 26, 2011 from 6-9 PM. Entombment will follow the services at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes, DE.
