George Edward Gadsby's Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father and husband, George Edward Gadsby of Lewes, DE, at the age of 79 on July 19, 2025.
Dad lived a life anchored in service, strength, and love. He proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard, retiring as a Senior Chief Boatswain Mate. His dedication to the sea continued as a respected Captain with the Cape May Lewes Ferry, where he helped countless travelers safely cross the waters he knew so well.
George was also a proud and devoted Mason, an active member of both the Blue Lodge and the York Rite. His commitment to the principles of brotherhood, integrity, and service extended far beyond his professional life.
To us, though, he was so much more than his titles. He was a steadfast presence, a source of quiet wisdom, and a man of deep integrity. Whether he was navigating rough seas or simply sitting with us at the kitchen table, Dad led with calm, care, and unwavering devotion.
His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched with his stories, his laughter, and his generous heart.
We will miss him deeply, but we take comfort in knowing he has found calm waters beyond this life in his daughter Megan's arms.
George was preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Ann Gadsby, on November 27, 1968; his father, George Weiss Gadsby, on August 2, 2002; his mother, Florence Conway Gadsby, on May 6, 2006; and his daughter, Megan Lea (Gadsby) Hammel, on July 17, 2008.
George is survived by his wife, Cheryl Lea (Doron) Gadsby of Lewes, DE; his son, Patrick Edward Gadsby and wife Carrie of Anderson, SC; and his daughter, Cheri Lea (Gadsby) Kiser and husband Faron of Harrington, DE. George's grandchildren include Shane Patrick Gadsby, Joseph George Mack, Emily Anne Gadsby, Dyquan Trivas Lee Snead, Angelina May Hammel, Melody Rose Gadsby, Luke Walker Hammel, and extended grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Fair winds and following seas, Captain.
