My association with the Gadsby family began through his son Patrick, with whom I was honored to serve in the U.S. Navy on USS DALLAS. Based upon the dedication, intelligence, and integrity I observed in his son, I knew he had derived from the best of stock. Then Patrick and I had the privilege of hosting both George and my own father (who passed away in 2014 from Vietnam-derived cancer) for a Dependent’s Cruise on the DALLAS nuclear fast attack submarine from Cocoa Beach, FL to Groton, CT, the submarine’s home port on a leisurely two night underway. It was easy to see how Patrick was such a great sailor when I got to know his U.S. Coast Guard vet father. After I left the DALLAS, we took an overnight trip down to Lewes, DE to visit George and Cheryl. We had the opportunity to ride the Cape May ferry he piloted in his second career, including a VIP tour of the vessel. We had a great day with them, including a wonderful meal, but mostly our memories are of the fellowship with the Gadsby family that day. I’m honored to remember the legacy of this extraordinary veteran, father, and citizen. May God bless his family in this time of grievance.
