I met Fred a few short years ago at his yard sale, to become instant friends. Was looking forward to Striper fish with him at the Inlet this coming year, and to learn more about flounder fishing tricks. Lost a good friend. Stevie Merritt
In reading the recollections his friends have shared, the warmth and emotion they contain is not at all surprising to me. He was a kind, knowledgeable and generous man who selflessly and quietly provided a helping hand to others in need. He was funny and fun to be with, and he knew and would share the many secrets that only a "local" outdoors-man could know. I was another of his friends with whom he shared some of his knowledge and for that, for his friendship, and for the many times he asked "Are ya burnin em?", he'll be within my cherished memories. We met Fred about 30 years ago when he was looking for mullet at Cape Henlopen. We were just learning how to cast a net and Fred must have felt sorry for us when he realized we didn't have a clue about how to cast a net.
So Fred being Fred gave us lessons on casting. Whenever we saw him casting for mullet he would be really kind and dump some of his mullet in our bucket. That was Fred - a good man.
Over the years we would see him in September and October at the point and we would just cast our nets and chat a while. We had many interesting conversations.
Fred was a good man - one of the nicest men we ever met - and we will surely miss him. We always looked forward to seeing him in our favorite mullet spots. Some day we will meet again and we hope they have mullet in heaven.
We will keep him in our prayers.

When someone would ask Freddie how he was doing he would always say "Just going along" and when he saw his fishing buddies at the Inlet he would say "Are you burning them up"..he will truly be missed. RIP Love Debbie
I've Known Fred for more than 52 years. As teenagers we drag raced, hung out at the Skating Rink and Drive-In. Later years we fished at Trap Pond.
We took a trip to Daytona., Heard alot of fish stories.
He was a good brother-in-law for 52 years, . Never heard anyone every say he every hurt anyone or did anyone wrong.

Good ole' Freddie the bait man. Fishing buddy in Delaware he was like family. I cooked Thanksgiving this year He told me my Turnips were a hit! Great buddy and friend of Eric's - when we would visit Debbie and Mom's Eric and Fred Would get their gear ready to head out fishing! Eric's gonna miss ya! We all would always be laughing, joking, and messing around.
Ole' Fred he was one of a kind.. He taught me a trick or two on Surf fishing, our girls got a kick outta him, he'd show them his wise little tricks on crabbing. I pray your at peace Fred, where the sun shines and warms your soul with no more pain.
