Charles Walton Smith Jr.'s Obituary
Charles Walton Smith Jr. (Walt), age 85, of Bridgeville, DE, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at his home. He was born in Bridgeville, DE, on May 31, 1926 son of the late Charles Walton Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Horsey Smith.
Mr. Smith was born on family farm and passed away on the farm doing what he loved best, taking care of the farm. He had lived a very active and productive life which included being devoted to raising his family, taking care of his many business interests, enjoying the sport of flying and serving his community in many different venues. Walt was a 1944 graduate of Bridgeville High School where many years later he would serve for 12 years on the school board and serve as its president for several years. He was the last living Charter Member of the Bridgeville Lions Club and was a Life Member of 64 years of the Bridgeville Vol. Fire Company where he had held every office including serving as Chief and President. Currently he was an active fire policeman with the department. Many other memberships included the Collins Pond Association, Vegetable Growers Association, Delmarva Poultry Industry, member of Union United Methodist Church Bridgeville, the Cracker Club, Hiram Masonic Lodge of Seaford, and the Civil Air Patrol. During his early years he became a Licensed Pilot in 1946 after learning to fly at the Bridgeville Airport, which is located where the Royal Farms Store currently exists.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 1/2 years Marjory W. Smith in July of 2004. He was father to five children: Tom and wife Bonnie, Susan Hayes and husband Bob, Charles and companion Greer Stango, Jenny Towers, and Matt and wife Sherri; brother to Gloria S. Reagan and her husband Jim. He is survived by 14 grand children and nine great grand children. He leaves behind his companion Elmira Swain.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011, at 3:00 PM at Union United Methodist Church, Market & Laws Streets, Bridgeville, DE. , With Pastor Dale Brown and Pastor Bob Hayes officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at church. Friends may also call at the church on Sunday July 17, 2011 from 2PM - 5PM. Burial with fireman's honors will follow the services at Bridgeville Cemetery.
