Carolyn M. Brunner's Obituary
Carolyn M. Brunner, age 93 of Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2018 at Christiana Care Health Systems. She was born in East Lansdowne, PA on December 28, 1924, and raised in Sussex County DE, daughter of the late William E. & Sadie W. Powell.
Carolyn trained as a nurse at Delaware Hospital in Wilmington during World War II, then was a school nurse at John M. Clayton High School before moving to Newark. She later earned her BS/RN at Wilmington College. She retired from a 20+ year career as school nurse at Downes Elementary School in Newark. Carolyn was a longtime member and volunteer at the Newark Welfare Committee and a member of the Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed playing the piano and leading many sing-along events throughout her adult life. She also enjoyed reading and was active in her neighborhood bridge club. More than anything, she cherished the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carolyn was a loving and devoted wife, mother and friend.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her two husbands: Harry W. McCann in 1949 and H. Richard Brunner in 1999; and her daughter, Rebecca McCann, also in 1999. She is survived by her sons: Daniel McCann of Newark, James Brunner of Bluffton SC, and Gerald Brunner of Newark; and her 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service and light luncheon reception will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 12:00 PM, at Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church, in Newark. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Ocean View DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to the Ocean View Historical Society, P.O. Box 576, Ocean View DE 19970.
