Barbara M. Boxer's Obituary
Barbara Boxer, 78, who recently moved to Lewes, DE passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, at Milford Place. Barbara was born in Queens, New York on December 13,1945. She was the daughter of Max and Kay (Binoff) Boxer. She grew up in Ellenville, NY, in the beautiful Catskill Mountains.
Barbara graduated from Buffalo State University and then began her lifelong career as a talented art teacher and artist. She educated and nurtured countless students over more than 30 years. She did the same for her nieces, nephew, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom fondly remember the fun art projects that they shared with Aunt Barbara. After retiring as a teacher, she continued to paint, draw, make silver jewelry, and take photographs.
Her favorite creations by far were her ocarinas, clay whistles that mimicked the sounds of the animals that she had sculpted. Living in New Hampshire, her most popular whistles were her loons that truly sounded like loons. If you attended a crafts fair in New England, you knew that Barbara was there when you could hear from afar the sound of her whistles as she demonstrated them to potential customers.
Barbara was more than an artist. She had an enormous and eclectic collection of music, ranging from Aaron Neville to the Squirrel Nut Zippers. She introduced many of us to wonderful musicians that we had never previously known. Her sense of humor made us all laugh and smile. She was just fun to be with. Her favorite comedians to see in person were Paula Poundstone and Randy Rainbow. Barbara loved hiking, biking, walking, and simply enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. Reading was another pleasurable pastime. Playing cards, especially Buracco, was one of her favorite things to do with her family and friends. Barbara was a great, loyal, and much beloved friend, sister, sister-in-law, and aunt. We are very sad, but also very grateful. Barbara enriched our lives with her art, music, love, and laughter.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother Sandy Boxer, and her companion of 40 years, Paul "Satch" Savchick. She is survived by her brother Jeffrey Boxer and his wife, Wendy, of Lewes; her sister Stephanie Mendelson and her husband Ric, of Woodcliff Lake, NJ; her niece, Elisha Magnifico and her husband Michael, of Long Grove, IL; her nephew Matthew Boxer and his wife Alison of New Market, MD; her niece Michelle Booth and her husband Todd, of Ellenville, NY; her niece Ali Mendelson and her husband Fima, of Seattle, WA; Her niece Jill Zolla and her husband Jon, of Sunnyvale, CA; her sister-in-law Rose Boxer, of Ocala, FL.; her great-nieces and great-nephews, Austen, Leo, Milo, Sasha, Lyla, Levi, Cameron and Daisy.
There will be no public services.
