Amy Lapp's Obituary
Amy Lapp, age 60, of Greenwood, DE, won her battle and went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 18, 2015. She courageously faced cancer head on and let very little slow her down. "Amy's Army" could not be more proud of the way she handled it on her own terms.
Amy was born in Durham, NC, on October 22, 1954, daughter of Edith L. Whatley and the late Dr. J. W. Whatley. She began her teaching career with the Henderson, NC public school system, where she taught special needs students. She later started a Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program for children with disabilities while living and working in Durham, NC.
In 1989, Amy with her husband, Jerry Lapp, and her horses relocated to Delaware. Amy continued her love of special needs students at Howard T. Ennis School in Georgetown, DE as a Para educator. She spent 22 years working with the Ennis Eagles and enjoyed each student. Over the years, Amy welcomed many students into her home, including Rayvon and Emma. She even stayed over with another student, Joey, from time to time. During this time, she also worked as a Bus Aid for R&M Busing Company.
In addition to her father, Amy was preceded in death by her niece, Amy Pegram, whom was her namesake. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Lapp of Greenwood, DE; a step-daughter, Kimberly Lapp and her fiancé Rick Smith and her two sons: Josh Nutter and Aiden Smith both of Berlin, MD; a sister, Reenie Pegram and her husband Bill; a brother, Joe Whatley and his wife Cathy; a nephew, Will Pegram and his wife Alisa; a niece, Elizabeth Tadlock and her husband Aaron all of Wilmington, NC area; a brother-in-law, Johnny Lapp of Greenwood, DE; and special friends: Garith Watkinson and Kristin Wilkins both of DE.
Amy also leaves behind her beautiful students in the caring hands of the Howard T. Ennis' staff, whom she also considered family.
