William Richard Nicholls
June 25, 1941 – March 9, 2025
William Richard Nicholls, age 83, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 9, 2025. He was born on June 25, 1941, in Staten Island, NY, to the late George and Harriett (Monahan) Nicholls.
A proud graduate of New Dorp High School in Staten Island, William went on to serve in the United States Air Force for four years. He later married his beloved wife, Maria (Marotto) Nicholls, on November 24, 1963, in Staten Island. Together, they built a life filled with love and shared adventures.
William enjoyed a long and rewarding career at Brooklyn Union Gas Company, where he worked as a Superintendent Assistant. He also ran a mobile home business in Delaware for many years, further building his legacy in the community. Outside of his professional life, he had a wide range of hobbies that brought him joy, including camping, snow skiing, and traveling. William was also a dedicated member of the community, serving as a Master Mason and a Shriner, giving back to those around him in meaningful ways.
In addition to his work in the community, William was an active and committed member of his church. He served as a Deacon and Elder, was part of the Men’s Bell Choir, and contributed to the Church Buildings and Grounds Committee. William also enjoyed decorating the church for Easter and Christmas, sharing his talents and love of tradition with his church family.
William was also a generous supporter of causes close to his heart. He contributed to the ASPCA and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, making a difference in the lives of many animals and children in need.
William is survived by his devoted wife, Maria; his two sons, Douglas Nicholls and Mark Nicholls, both of New Jersey; his grandchildren, Thomas, Ryan and Jack Nicholls; his sister-in-law, Joan Nicholls, of New Jersey; along with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces who held a special place in his heart.
He was predeceased by his brother, George Nicholls, of Millsboro, DE.
A memorial service in honor of William’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on April 5 2025 at the Reformed Church of Huguenot Park, located at 5474 Amboy Road, Staten Island, NY, 10312.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Reformed Church of Huguenot Park, the ASPCA, or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
