William Martin Jr.'s Obituary
William Martin Jr (1929-2024)
William “Billy” Martin Jr, age 94, of Milton, Delaware, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 22nd after fighting dementia for several years.
Billy was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1929 to Iva Mae and William Martin. He was a loving husband, hard-working father, devoted grandfather, and charismatic entertainer.
Billy met the love of his life, Joan Hollingshead, while bartending in New Jersey. They were happily married for over 50 years, calling each other “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” through their golden years, a true love story.
Billy held many jobs, serving in the Navy Reserve before working as a semi-pro football player, actor, entrepreneur, and eventually finding success as a salesman for Safeguard Business Systems. After several attempts at retirement, he made the most of his free time, playing tennis and golf well into his 80’s, enjoying a vibrant social life, and spending summers with his granddaughter. He also served his community as an officer of the Rotary Club of Lewes-Rehoboth Beach. Billy’s memorable presence made a lasting impression on those who knew him and his wise sayings and general love for life will carry on his memory.
Billy was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Martin, and his son, William “Billy” R. Martin. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Gray (James), granddaughter Melissa Filippone (John), and great-grandson, Joseph.
