I had the privilege of knowing Bill since I joined the University of Delaware in 1999. Our offices were next to each other, and over the years I came to value his friendship, quiet mentorship, and wonderful sense of humor. When the conversation turned to a well-known colleague, Bill would sometimes smile and say, "He's not like us, but importantly, we're not like him." Looking back now, I find myself thinking that Bill was indeed "not like us", and, importantly, I wish I could be more like Bill.

My wife, Janet, and I send our condolences for the loss of cousin Bill. If you were not aware of his numerous accomplishments, you would not hear it from him. His humility in that respect is most admirable. Whether as a young child or an adult, his demeanor never changed. We shared that
perspective and sense of humor that is common to the Gehrlein Family. I will sorely miss that wry grin and the twinkle in his eye that revealed the wheels in there were always turning. I pray you, Cousin Bill, rest in peace for all of eternity.
