William M. Doran's Obituary
William Michael Doran, “Bill,” passed away on Monday, November 9, 2015 after a valiant battle against cancer that lasted many years. He was born on April 10, 1932, into a lively Irish family in Jersey City, New Jersey to James Doran and Helen Broderick.
Bill was in advertising nearly all of his life. He published “Chain Store Age” and “Cue” magazine in New York City, and most recently sold real estate. In addition, he began his own company Doran Communications, which represented several publications for the National Council of Social Studies. He continued to work into his eighties.
Bill attended Georgetown University, where he actively participated in sports and politics as well as enjoying a solid education. After graduating in 1954, he entered the Air Force as an officer for several years before beginning his career. Throughout his life, Bill liked nothing better than a rousing debate on political issues. He always loved participating in or watching sports of all types from Little League to professional. An avid golfer, Bill played often and well, belonging to Montclair Golf Club in New Jersey, and most recently, Kings Creek Golf Club in Rehoboth.
Predeceased family members included his father, James Doran, mother, Helen Broderick, brother, Bob Doran, and former wife, Lorna Kelly Doran.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jean Richey Doran, and children- William Doran Jr. and his wife, Susan, (New York), Katie Carballeira and husband, Joe, (New York), Michael Doran and wife, Adair, (Salisbury, North Carolina), Jim Doran, (Las Vegas, Nevada), and Mark Doran, (Lewes, DE), step children Melissa Kovalakides, (North Beach, MD), Leslie Kovalakides, (Durham, Maine), Christina Powell and husband, Rick, (Severna Park, MD), Matt Kovalakides and wife, Sarah, (Westfield, NJ), and brothers Jim Doran and wife Pat (Spring Lake, NJ), and Ron Doran and his wife, Carol, (Shrewsbury, NJ).
Bill’s eight grandchildren include Katie Doran, Kelly Doran, Michael Doran, Isabel Doran, Olivia Doran, Gabrielle Doran, Bill Carballeira, and Caroline Carballeira. His four step grandchildren are Bailey Benedick, Bryce Benedick, Bennett Kovalakides, and Anne Kovalakides.
The family would like to thank the many friends who have made Bill’s life a joyful experience and who have provided love and support throughout his illness. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Delaware Humane Society at 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE, 19801.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at 11 AM, at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, DE 19958. Interment with Military Honors will follow services at 1 PM at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE.
