Vickie L. Helman's Obituary
Vickie L. Helman, age 57 of Harrisburg, PA passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, DE. She was born on Sunday, April 17, 1960 in Wilmington, DE, daughter of G. Roger and Carol Helman and the late Peggy McIntosh Helman.
Vickie was a 1978 Graduate of Middletown High School, where she was a track star and holds the state record for 110 yard hurdles. She also played on the varsity basketball team. Following graduation, she enlisted in the United States Air Force where she honorably served her country for 6 years, including spending 2 of them stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany as a Helicopter Crew Chief, earning the rank of Sergeant. Soon after, Vickie started working as a preschool teacher for several years at Harrisburg Hospital. She then started working as a courier at Harrisburg Catholic Diocese before continuing to her most recent employment at Harrisburg Area Community College.
Vickie was a member of the Olmsted Players Theatre Group in Middletown, the assistant Tennis Coach for 20 years at Bishop McDevitt High School. In the 2003, Vickie competed in the USTA National League Level Championship, winning her doubles match to help the team place 5th in the country. In her free time, Vickie enjoyed traveling, the beach, Disney World, attending live sports games, caring for her many animals, and most of all spending time with her family and her friends.
In addition to her parents, Vickie is survived by her “best bud,” Diane Rabold; her three sisters: Karen Guenther and her husband Thomas of Middletown, Lisa Tharp of Etters, Lori Shaffer and her husband Brent of Linglestown, Vickie adored her nieces and nephews: Kelly and Curtis Cole and their children Emily and Courtney; Greg and Laura Guenther and their children Emerson and Oliver; Tessa and Jake Shaffer; and Donald and Becki Collins and their daughter Brynn; and the late Jennifer Carr and her children Jordan and Nikolas. Vickie had many friends who also filled her life with love.
Vickie will be interred at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors. All are welcome to attend the committal service on Friday, September 1st at 1:00 pm. A procession will form at 12:45 behind the Administration Building.
At Vickie’s request, “A BIG ASS PARTY” will be held in her honor to celebrate her life well lived. On Friday, September 1st, a casual open house celebration will be held from 4:00 - 9:00 pm at the Paxtonia Fire Hall on 125 S. Johnson Street in Harrisburg, PA.
