Thompson Robert Allen's Obituary
Robert A Thompson, age 84, of Lewes, DE went to be with the Lord on June 11, 2006. He died peacefully in the home of his daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Jim Travis. Robert was reunited with his beloved wife Marietta who preceeded him in death 20 years ago. Robert was a WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Navy. Although he didn't talk much about the war, he was considered a hero. His batallion was the first to storm the beach at Normandy. After 4 years of service in the Navy, he then earned a degree in Tool & Die Engineering. He retired from Dresser Wayne Industries in November 1979. Robert was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Lewes, and had served as a volunteer for Hospice.
Until his health wouldn't permit, he met weekly with his friends at the Senior Center in Rehoboth Beach to pursue his favorite hobby of carving. He could bring any piece of wood or stone to life, and was a very gifted artist .
Robert is survived by three children: Dale Thompson and his wife Candy; Daphne Baca and her husband Paul, and Deborah Travis and her husband Jim. Also surviving are his grandchildren Tonya Braun & husband Christopher, Heather Thompson, Benjamin Holston, Matthew Holston and his wife Jay, Jim Travis & his wife Sheri, Sean Travis and his wife Lillian, & Justin and Chad Travis. He also had 3 great-grandchildren: Timothy and Nathan Braun and Thomas Hayden Travis. He also had many dear friends and one very special friend, Shirley Hennessy.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday June 15, 2006 at 12:00 noon at the First Baptist Church, Kings Highway, Lewes, DE with Pastor David Munro officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon.
Burial will be held on Monday June 19, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Compassionate care Hospice, 201A West DuPont Highway, Millsboro, DE 19966.
