Susanne L. Schmierer's Obituary
Susanne L. (Quiri) Schmierer, age 55, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009, at her residence. Susanne was born in Amsterdam, upstate New York.
As a young child, the family moved to Maryland's eastern shore where they operated a horse farm near Queenstown. Growing up, she developed a love of horse and riding; she entered many horse shows and competitions, often bringing home a blue or red ribbon. Susanne also learned sewing, knitting and crocheting, crafts that would blossom later in life. Susanne attended local elementary school and then Queen Anne's County High School in Centreville. After graduation she went on to Patricia Stevens School of Merchandising in Baltimore. Upon graduation from Patricia Stevens she was awarded a job with the Hecht Company in Salisbury, MD where she shared an apartment with a friend and fellow graduate. Her roommate and friend brought her to Rehoboth Beach where on a chance encounter she met her future husband. Married, Sue settled into living in a beach resort. However, some things never change, and with Sue's love of animals, their home was always shared with a dog, cats, and other pets that included, at times, guinea pigs, birds, fish and gerbils. Even the outside of the home had many colorful birds and woodland animals that were attracted to feeders. Sue enjoyed knitting, reading and her computer at home. She was an avid NASCAR fan, but that was slightly diminished with the loss of her favorite driver. Susanne loved to travel. Some of her favorite places were the Amish area of Pennsylvania, civil war sites, the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia, and antique shops to add to her many collections. She worked at several area businesses over the years and also sold her sewn and knitted items at craft shows and festivals for a time. Susanne worked at QVC in Rehoboth Beach, starting out in sales and quickly advancing to an Assistant Manager position. Health complications forced her to scale back her position and hours and to finally take a leave of absence.
She was preceded in death by her father George E. Quiri. She is survived by her mother Ruth A. (Dorn) Quiri of Easton, MD; her husband Kenneth W. Schmierer, Jr. of Rehoboth Beach; sisters-in-law, Karen Stack and Carol Hellens; brother-in-law Keith Schmierer; aunt and uncle Marily and Richard Havlicek; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, June 25, 2009, 2:00 PM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 PM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, 2501 Oak Lawn Ave., Suite 435, Dallas, TX 75219 or the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, DE 19958.
