Susan Maryann Matulewicz's Obituary
Susan “Sue” Maryann Matulewicz passed away on March 19, 2023, at the age of 65 in her home overlooking the bay in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
Sue was born on July 16, 1957, in Bayonne, NJ to parents Andrew and Stella Dancisin. Her family moved to Bangor, PA in 1958, where she and her older brother, Andy, spent their formative years. Sue attended Pius X High School in Roseto, PA, where she was valedictorian of her 1975 graduating class and a member of the color guard. Sue was intelligent and engaging, which led her to winning the Scholastic Award and Miss Congeniality at the Junior Miss Pageant. She then went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Bloomsburg State College and a Certificate in Medical Technology from the Allentown and Sacred Heart Hospital Center in 1979. She also received a Master of Science degree in Human Resources Education from Scranton University in 1985. Sue was promoted to Laboratory Manager at Quakertown Community Hospital.
Sue instilled a deep and lasting sense of curiosity and adventure in her daughters, Sasha, and Natalie. They have fond memories of their mom rigging up science experiments in the kitchen, leading hikes at Hawk Mountain with the Girl Scouts, and wading around in streams at local parks. Sue selflessly supported her daughters’ interests, attending various riding lessons and horse shows over the years, always cheering enthusiastically from the fence line.
Sue moved to Colts Neck, NJ, and married Ted Matulewicz on the island of Anguilla shortly thereafter. They continued to vacation in various tropical locations, where Sue loved to spend her time snorkeling and exploring the reefs. She was always up for trying new things and surprised us all by skydiving, one of her bucket list items. Sue was an avid Bruce Springsteen fan and went to more of his concerts than we can remember! She watched Jeopardy every day and cooked a variety of cuisines for the people she loved. Sue warmly welcomed people into her home with fan favorite dishes like her famed crab dip and spiced pretzels.
Sue and Ted moved into their beloved home in Rehoboth Beach, DE soon after her health began to decline and lived a happy and comfortable life on the bay for over a decade. Sue enjoyed watching the marsh wildlife and coastal views while experimenting in the kitchen. More than anything, she enjoyed hosting her family, spending time around the kitchen table catching up, and reminiscing. The birth of her granddaughter, Lily, brought Sue the most joy and earned her the nickname “Bubbles” for their favorite playtime activity together.
Sue will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew, and Stella Dancisin. She is survived by her husband Theodore Matulewicz; her daughters: Sasha Wagner and Natalie Garbutt and their husbands; and granddaughter, Lily Garbutt. She is also survived by her brother, Andy Dancisin, and her niece, Nicole Beck, and her husband.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Sue’s memory to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (https://phassociation.org/donate/) or The Assistance Fund (https://tafcares.org/donors/donate/).
