Stephen Ware Pie's Obituary
Stephen Ware Pie', age 63, died on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware after a nearly 20 year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Scleroses (ALS) , better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Mr. Pie' was born in Wilmington, DE, graduating from Brandywine High School in 1967. He was medically retired in 1991 after serving 23 years in the United States Navy with a rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9). Master Chief Pie' was involved in the evacuation of Saigon in 1975 during the Vietnam War while on board the USS Midway (CV-41) and was part of Desert Storm while on board the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) in 1990-1991. He was also stationed on the USS Austin (LPD-4); NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal; NAS Lakehurst, NJ; NAS Norfolk, VA; NAS Patuxent River, MD. He continued his education while in the Navy, graduating from Regent College, Albany, New York in 1985. After retirement from the Navy, he worked for the ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter, later becoming a board and committee member. His hobbies were movies and reading.
Mr. Pie' was predeceased by his father, Charles S. Pie' in 2003. Survivors include his mother, Anita Fonville Pie' of Hockessin, DE; brother Charles S. Pie' and wife Jeanette of Earleville, MD; brother David P. Pie' and wife Sherry of Rehoboth Beach, DE; niece Monica Pie' Csatari and husband David of Jackson, NJ; niece Renee Pie' of Baltimore, MD; nephew Corey Pie' and wife Kathy of Fort Collins, CO; niece Adrienne Pie' and fiancé Kenny Wolf of Whaleyville, MD; godson Stephen Michael Herman of Fort Lauderdale, FL; goddaughter Tracy Herman Gioffre of Wilmington, DE; as well as 6 grandnephews, 2 grandnieces and numerous cousins and friends. Steve's courage and optimism were inspirational to all who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.
A private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date in Hockessin, Delaware. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter, 321 Norristown Road, Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002.
