Samuel Smulyan's Obituary
Samuel Smulyan, age 75, died peacefully at home in Lewes, DE on June 14, 2020, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Plymouth, PA in 1944, son of the late William and Helen (Gerhsonowitz) Smulyan.
Sam attended Mansfield University, graduating in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He additionally received a master's degree in English Literature from Wilkes University. After a brief stint teaching, Sam moved to Philadelphia where he met his future wife, Anita. They eventually settled in Cherry Hill, NJ where they raised their family. Sam had a long, successful career at the State of New Jersey’s Department of Banking and Insurance.
In 2008, Sam retired and moved to Lewes, DE along with his wife. He blossomed in retirement, taking active roles in Seaside Jewish Community and Bay Crossing (55 and Better) Community; participating in local community theater; as well as volunteering at Rehoboth Community Resource Center and at the ISOP suppers. He was grateful for the wonderful community and connections he developed in retirement.
Sam is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Anita Smulyan; his children: Glenn Marla "Beth" Smulyan (Hana Feit) of Brooklyn, NY and Shayn Smulyan (Elizabeth Miller) of Lynn, MA; and his brother, Ira Smulyan (Sheila) of Union, NJ.
Sam's loved ones are planning ways to honor his life over the next year, following a private graveside service for family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Sam's memory to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963, Cancer Support Community Delaware, 18947 John J Williams Highway, Suite 312, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971, or Seaside Jewish Community Service Committee, 18970 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
