Ruth C. Sweeney's Obituary
Ruth C. (Langan) Sweeney, age 79, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away Wednesday, June 28 at her late residence with dignity and at peace, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born April 20, 1927 in Pittston, PA daughter of the late William J. and Angela (McGuire) Langan. The family moved to Jersey City shortly thereafter and Ruth's late sister, Mary Therese, and her brother, Michael, were born.
Mrs. Sweeney graduated from Mary Immaculate Hospital School of Nursing in Jamaica, NY in 1947. Following graduation, Ruth married her late husband, Raymond G. Sweeney and they moved to Forest Hills, NY where their first son, Raymond Jr. was born. The family then moved to Wilmington where Brian, Mary and Joe were born. In 1975, her husband passed away. Ruth was determined to put her children through college so she moved forward and earned a Master's degree in Counseling from Wilmington College. She then worked as a school nurse at St. Elizabeth High, St. Mark's High and the Gunning/Bedford School District, all in the Wilmington area, for nearly 25 years. After an early retirement, she sold her home in Wilmington and moved to Rehoboth Beach. She went to work at Beebe as a Same Day Surgery Pre-Op Nurse, retiring in 1998 after seven years with Beebe.
Mrs. Sweeney is survived by her three sons, Raymond Sweeney and his wife Martha of Rehoboth Beach, Brian Sweeney of Newark, DE, and Joseph Sweeney and wife Debbie of Newark. DE; her daughter, Mary Previtera and her husband Martin of Rehoboth Beach; four grandchildren, Sean, Shannon, Jennifer and Patrick Sweeney; one great-granddaughter, Kayla Sweeney; her brother, Michael Langan and his wife Ann of Pt. Pleasant, NJ; and an abundance of personal and professional friends.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 5, 11 AM at St. Edmond's Catholic Church, King Charles & Laurel Streets, Rehoboth Beach with Father Charles Brown III officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to Mass. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, July 6, 11 AM at All Saints Cemetery, Kirkwood Highway, Newark, DE. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in memory of Ruth to the Beebe Medical Foundation, Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
