Rose C Payne's Obituary
Rose C. Payne, age 95, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2013, at Renaissance Healthcare, in Millsboro, DE. She was born on Saturday, January 12, 1918 in Palmyra, NJ, daughter of the late George and Margaret (Sweeney) McCann.
Mrs. Payne spent a lifelong career working as an Administrative Assistant to the President of the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute. In 1989, after 27 years of work, she reluctantly retired and soon after moved to the beach where she quickly became involved in a new full time career, volunteering. Mrs. Payne thoroughly enjoyed dedicating countless hours volunteering at various organizations including the Cape Henlopen Senior Center and Casa San Francisco. She was a member of the AARP State Legislative Committee and a parishioner of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. In her free time she enjoyed reading, studying history and politics, and constantly intellectually challenging herself. Mrs. Payne was a loving grandmother, aunt, and dear friend who will be missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Payne in 1972; her daughter, Janet R. Achtermann in 2012; her brother: George O. McCann; and her two sisters: Margaret Walsh and Mary McCann. She is survived by her loving and dedicated granddaughter, Janel R. Gates of Wilmington, DE; her three nephews: John Walsh, Michael McCann, and John McNichol; her two nieces: Margaret McCann and Kathy Ghert; and numerous grand and great grandnieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on, Friday, August 16, 2013 at 11:00AM at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, DE 19958. A public viewing will be held prior to mass on Friday from 9:30AM to 10:15AM at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy, Lewes, DE 19958. Interment will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 11:00AM at Calvary Cemetery, 718 Hazelwood Ave, Pittsburgh, PA.
