Rose Marie Lucy Hughes' Obituary
Rose Marie Lucy Hughes, 84, of Millsboro, DE, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on May 12, 1942, in Brooklyn, NY, Mrs. Hughes was the beloved daughter of the late Julia Bocchino Buonfiglio and Michael Buonfiglio. She married the love of her life, Stephen D. Hughes, in Brooklyn, NY, in September of 1964, beginning a devoted marriage filled with love, family, and cherished memories.
Mrs. Hughes was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother whose warmth and kindness touched everyone who knew her. She was especially known for her incredible cooking and the joy she brought to family gatherings and holidays through her meals. Her kitchen was always a place of comfort, laughter, and love. She also enjoyed shopping trips to Macy’s, which brought her much happiness over the years.
During the last 12 years of her life, Mrs. Hughes’ greatest joy was spending time with her beloved granddaughter, Lila Theresa Hughes. Their bond brought immense happiness and meaning to her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Rose Marie Ann Hughes; her granddaughter, Lila Theresa Hughes; and her nieces and nephews, Jeannay Buonfiglio Murphy, Michael Buonfiglio III, Carl DeFilippo, Thomas DeFilippo, Angela DeFilippo, Carl DeFilippo III, and Nico DeFilippo.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hughes was predeceased by her devoted husband, Stephen D. Hughes, and her beloved cousin, Eleanor DeFilippo.
Mrs. Hughes will be remembered for her loving spirit, dedication to family, wonderful cooking, and the countless memories she created with those she loved most.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at 11:00 AM, at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, DE, where family and friends may visit from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Interment to follow the mass, at 1:00 PM, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 32112 Vines Creek Rd., Dagsboro, DE.
