Robert Edward Palmer's Obituary
Robert E. Palmer, 80, of Lewes, Delaware, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, surrounded by his closest family members. Born in Lewes on April 6, 1945, Robert was a lifelong resident whose devotion to family, community, and country defined a life well lived.
The son of Robert and Elizabeth Palmer, Robert graduated from Lewes High School in 1963. Shortly thereafter, he answered the call to serve his nation, joining the United States Army and serving in the Vietnam War. Robert’s time in uniform reflected the courage, discipline, and quiet strength that were the hallmarks of his character throughout his life.
Upon returning home, Robert continued his commitment to service as a longtime member of the Lewes Fire Department, eventually serving as Fire Chief and on the Delaware State Fire Commission. Whether responding to emergencies or mentoring younger volunteers, Robert was a steady and respected presence. His dedication helped shape the department’s legacy of excellence and community trust.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, devoted partner, and best friend of 59 years, Diane Palmer. He also leaves behind his cherished grandson, Jacob Palmer; his sister, Carolyn Wood; his sisters-in-law Brenda Zullo, Wanda Zullo, and Pamela Travis; and several nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by his parents Robert and Elizabeth Palmer and his brother-in-law Joseph B. Zullo Jr. His family was his pride and joy, and he found deep fulfillment in their love and companionship.
Robert is remembered for his unwavering integrity, his quiet generosity, and his deep-rooted love for Lewes. His legacy endures in the lives he touched, the community he served, and the family he adored.
