Robert D. Hayden's Obituary
Robert D. Hayden, Sr., of Harrington, DE passed away Thursday, December 3. Born in Robbins, DE, in 1923, he was the third son of Eugene T. Hayden, Sr., and Mabel (Lucas) Hayden.
Mr. Hayden grew up in Rehoboth Beach. Part of American’s Greatest Generation, he was awarded two Purple Hearts as he served in the 490th Engineer Company of the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during WW II (between January of 1943 to May of 1946). He was a crane and heavy equipment operator on the Delmarva Peninsula for all of his working career with an avocation to harness horses and aviation, having a pilot’s license. During his career, he built several bridges throughout Delaware as a general contractor.
He is survived by son, John P. Hayden and wife Judy, of Harrington; daughters, Patricia Campbell-White and husband, Donald C. White of Rehoboth Beach; Maggi Tice and husband, Bill of Harrington; Lisa V. Hayden of Milford; son Robert.V. Hayden of Harrington; and daughter Frances Reed and husband, Robert of Bridgeville. He is predeceased by son Robert D. Hayden, Jr. in April 2007. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
Services and interment will be Sunday, December 13 at 1:00 P.M. at Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Henlopen Avenue, Rehoboth Beach with services being conducted by Mr. Hayden’s grandson, Rev. Atley B. Vickers, Jr. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.
