Of the many outstanding people who served on the Board of CARE, Bob stood out like few others. His commitment to international development and relief went far beyond economic issues, he was deeply concerned with respect for the dignity and culture of people and societies where CARE worked. As a staff member of CARE, it was a great pleasure and learning opportunity to work with Bob.
Bob and I became good friends in the 1980s when he ran the AGB and I the AAUP. We shared a "different" sense of humor that often drove our One Dupont Circle colleagues crazy, but they always laughed. Bob was about fifteen years my senior, so I was the junior exec in the building, but that never stood in the way of our friendship. In addition to being a great guy, Bob Gale was the most enlightened leader in higher education during his years at the AGB.
We had great affection and respect for both Bob and Barbara. Virginia and I miss them.
"Big Bob" was like a second father to me. I have many fond memories of him. I will miss him.
