Robert W. Flowers' Obituary
Robert W. Flowers, Jr., age 80, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at, Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, DE. He was born in Wilmington, DE, on Saturday, March 14, 1931, son of the late Nellie Elizabeth (Sines) and Robert W. Flowers, Sr.
Mr. Flowers was a self-employed general contractor who was devoted to his family, especially to his daughter Dawn, a special needs child. He volunteered countless hours to Special Olympics in New Castle County and supported Dawn in all her favorite sports. In 2003, he travelled to Ireland with Dawn to support her endeavors with the Special Olympics World Games; Dawn brought home two silver and one bronze medal in Bocci Ball. Mr. Flowers was also very active in his parish, St. Margaret of Scotland in Newark, DE and was highly skilled in working with wood. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Doris E. (Vanvolkenburgh) Flowers (Dec. 2009); his brother Albert Flowers; and his sister Alice Jean Flowers. He is survived by five children: Debbi Ewing and husband Michael of Bucks County, PA, Robert Flowers III of Wilmington, Diane Rastelli and husband Jeffrey of Felton, DE, Donna Youssi and husband Mark of Oxford, PA, and Dawn Flowers of Felton, DE; six grandchildren: James and wife Tenley, Stephen, Arthur, Robert, Jeremy and Kyle; two great-grandchildren: Jamie and Hailey; a brother Charles Flowers and wife Jean of Milton, DE; and a sister Elaine Mitchell of Wilmington.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 10:30 AM at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church, 2431 Frazer Road, Newark, DE; Monsignor Hopkins will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE. Friends may visit with the family at the church beginning at 9:30 AM. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in the Flowers’ family name to Special Olympics of Delaware, 619 South College Avenue, Newark, DE 19716.
