ROBERT DANDOIS JOHNSON
Retired River Pilot
Robert D. Johnson, born June 11, 1940 in Wildwood, NJ passed Wednesday, December 23, 2009 from complications caused by ALS at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, MD. Capt. Johnson graduated Wildwood High School in 1958, became an apprentice pilot that year, and after a 4 year period served as a member of the Pilots’ Assn. for the Bay and River Delaware for 35 years; retiring in 1997. While he grew up in North Wildwood, he later resided in Alden, PA; Glen Mills, PA; Rio Grande, NJ: and moved to rural Milton, DE in 1993. While living in Rio Grande, he served 16 years as a committeeman for BSA Troop 59, 6 years as an assistant coach with township sponsored football and soccer. Capt Johnson also was chairperson of the Middle Twp. Mayor’s Traffic Committee for the first 6 years of its existence. In retirement he became an enthusiast of G Scale model railroading, and was a Charter Member of Shore Line Garden Railroad Club. Mr. Johnson was predeceased by his parents Capt. James P. Johnson & Isabel D. Johnson. He is survived by his wife Dianne L. Johnson of Lewes, son David (Tina) Johnson of Lewes, son Gregg (Melanie) Johnson of San Jose, CA, stepdaughter Christy (Charles) Zerhusen of Glen Allen, VA; stepson Jon Colcord of Cornelius, NC; 8 grandchildren; and a brother Capt. James C. (Cynthia) Johnson of West Chester, PA. Capt. Johnson will be cremated and buried in Delaware Bay. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, December 27, 2009, 2:00 PM, at Conley's United Methodist Church, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes, DE. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE. In lieu of flowers it is requested that a contribution be made either to Pilots’ Society, 28 Cripple Creek Run, Milton, DE 19968 or to Conley’s UM Church Building Fund, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
