Robert Peter "Bob" Rougeau's Obituary
Robert Peter “Bob” Rougeau, 67, of Lewes, DE, passed away on April 19, 2015 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE. He was born on February 23, 1948, in Plattsburgh, NY, son of the late Robert Frederick Rougeau and Mayfred Lorraine (Hale) Rougeau.
Bob spent his formative years in Plattsburgh, where he met his wife, Sandy Fleury. After graduating from Mt. Assumption Institute in 1966, he attended Niagara College in Buffalo, NY, before graduating from SUNY Plattsburgh with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Theology.
Bob spent his entire professional career working for the Social Security Administration. His career began one week after college as a claims representative in Corning, NY. After stints in Jamaica, Queens, NY and Brooklyn, NY, he settled with his family in Vineland, NJ. He spent thirty-three years in the Bridgeton office, becoming the manager of the Bridgeton and Glassboro offices. During his tenure he hosted a local radio call-in show and wrote a weekly newspaper column about Social Security.
While living in Vineland and Glassboro, NJ, Bob was active in many community organizations including Human Services Advisory Council for Cumberland County, Health Systems Agency, Cumberland County HIV Services Planning Council, the Jaycees, and the Salem County Interagency Office. He also served as the board President of the South Jersey AIDS Alliance.
After his retirement, in 2007, Bob relocated to Lewes, DE. He was active in the Sussex County Democratic Party, where he served as a Committeeman from the 20th RD, and served as Corresponding Secretary. He attended St. Edmond Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach.
Bob had an avid interest in American history, Broadway shows, classic movies and travel. He also enjoyed spending time with friends, playing dominos, square dancing, and spirited political debate. He treasured hosting family and friends for dinner, parties, and visits.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher Rougeau of Plattsburgh, NY. He is survived by three sons, Jefferson R. Creps-Rougeau and his husband Steven of Harrisburg, PA; Jason E. Rougeau of Atlantic City, NJ; Jeremy A. Rougeau and his wife Darcie of Conception Junction, MO; a sister, Bonnie Gonyo and her husband Bernard of Plattsburgh, NY; a sister, Jill Mercer of Smyrna, DE; a brother, Barry Rougeau of Cadysville, NY; a sister-in-law, Cindy Rougeau of Plattsburgh, NY; three grandchildren, Joshua Rougeau, Emilee Rougeau and Josie Rougeau; a former wife, Sandy Carty of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; several nieces and nephews; and a lifetime of treasured friends.
A Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015, at 3:00 PM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE 19958, where friends may visit beginning at 2:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4919 S. Catherine Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901, on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Plattsburgh, NY.
