Robert Joseph Berger's Obituary
Robert "Bob" J. Berger, 84, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024, peacefully at his home in Lewes, DE surrounded by family. He was born July 29, 1939, in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Joseph and Louise Berger.
Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rachel Berger; son, Michael Berger; three daughters, Lisa Meterko and her spouse Greg Meterko, Laura Skinner, Sharon Adams and her spouse Jim Adams; seven grandchildren John Paul, Harley, Madeleine and her spouse Justin, Ryan, Shelby and Tanner, and great granddaughter Elianna. Bob is also survived by three sisters Marge Abate and her spouse Al Abate, Mary Orr and Joan Patter, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Sadly, Bob was predeceased by son-in-law Paul Skinner; brothers-in-law Charles “Butch” Orr and Tim Patter, and many other close relatives and friends.
Upon graduating with the class of 1957 at Bethel High School in Bethel Park, PA, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy. During his tour of duty, he met the love of his life, Rachel, as pen pals. After completing his tour of duty, Bob married Rachel, they soon after moved to the Washington, DC area, settling in Ft. Washington, MD. He began working at the US Department of State as a computer programmer, rising to the top level of Chief of Programming upon his retirement in 1994. Soon after retiring, Bob and Rachel moved to their current residence in Lewes, DE, where they devoted their time to volunteer work in eastern Sussex County. These organizations included Cape Henlopen Food Basket, Salt-N-Light St. Edmonds, Read Aloud Delaware, Casa San Francisco, Children's Beach House and most importantly Meals On Wheels leading to receiving, along with his wife Rachel, the Jefferson Award of Eastern Sussex County in recognition of their selfless service. Bob enjoyed golfing, travelling, photography, coin collecting and watching the Washington Capitals and Nationals, collecting church bulletins and match books from all 50 states that they visited.
Bob will be sadly missed for his attention to detail on important matters and his sense of humor in unimportant matters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Edmond Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 11:00AM where friends and family may visit beginning at 10:00AM. A chapel committal will be held at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery immediately following the Mass.
