Robert David Behuniak's Obituary
Rob passed away on November 1st, 2025, following a short illness. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Maureen (Cooley) Behuniak; his children, Darren Behuniak of Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, Brendan Behuniak of Dallas, Texas, and Larissa (Behuniak) Simpson of Arnold, Maryland; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Born in Troy, New York, Rob grew up in Maplewood, where he attended local schools as well as schools in Watervliet. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. Soon after, Rob trained with and was accepted into the U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets), serving as a paratrooper medic during the Vietnam War era. He was deeply proud of his service and continued to serve his country through the National Guard.
Following his military service, Rob began his professional career as a caseworker with the Albany County Department of Social Services, which inspired him to pursue a master’s degree from the State University of New York School of Social Welfare. After graduating, he joined the Albany Child Guidance Center as a family therapy clinician. While working there for several years, Rob continued to expand his education and training through the Nathan Ackerman Family Therapy Institute and the Center for Family Learning. Alongside his work at the Center, he maintained a part-time private practice specializing in individual and marital counseling.
Committed to supporting families in all aspects of their lives, Rob later trained as a Certified Financial Planner. In time, he advanced to a management role, where he trained and mentored other advisors in working effectively with families. He remained in this field for many years, retiring in 2015 and relocating to Georgetown, Delaware.
In his leisure time, Rob enjoyed coaching his sons’ baseball and basketball teams and served on the Board of the Clifton Park Baseball League, where he helped secure community financial support. He was an avid reader with a passion for research on a wide range of topics and generously shared his knowledge with others during many evenings of discussion.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
