Richard F. Kauffman's Obituary
Richard Kauffman entered the Church Triumphant on March 10, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, his daughter, son-in-law, two granddaughters and a great grandson.
Richard was born to John F. and Hazel Kauffman near Liverpool, PA. His life was dedicated to helping others, social justice and teaching. After graduating from Franklin and Marshall College he attended Gettysburg Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Lutheran Pastor. He ministered in Loganton. PA and York, PA. While serving Christ Lutheran Church in Spry, he also acted as a chaplain with the York City police during the civil rights movement. He then was called to join the PA Human Relations Commission where he continued to fight for the individual harmed by injustice. While at the commission, he also explored his love of teaching as an adjunct faculty member of York College where he taught philosophy, living world religions and ethics.
Richard retired to the Delaware shore where he continued serving the community by being a court appointed CASA worker, and a member of Delaware Court mediation. When Alzheimer’s claimed his wife, they moved to Cadbury in Lewes where Richard continued teaching in the University of Delaware’s Osher Center, mediating and working with the Tolerance and Justice League.
Richard will be deeply missed by all that he came in contact with, but his legacy of serving his fellow man will continue with the various lives that he touched. A graveside service will be held at St. Matthews Cemetery, 600 Centerville, Road, Millerstown, PA at 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 14, 2019. A memorial service will follow on April 28, 2019 at 2:00 PM in the auditorium at the Moorings in Lewes, 17028 Cadbury Cir, Lewes, DE 19958.
In lieu of flowers, please continue Richard’s legacy by offering a memorial gift to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104; The Nature Conservancy, 703 Chestnut St, Milton, DE 19968; or Community Lutheran Church, 30897 Omar Road, Frankford, DE 19945.
