Richard "Dick" Grant Cleaveland's Obituary
Richard “Dick” Grant Cleaveland, of Lewes, DE passed away on Monday, February 26, 2018, at his home in Lewes, DE. He was born July 27, 1926 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, son of the late LeRoy Adams and Suzayne Margaret (Calligan) Cleaveland. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Cleaveland (Benner) whom he married on April 24,1965 in Salem, New Jersey.
Richard attended Northwestern University (1947-1950, BSEE), and was elected to national honor societies Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu. He was employed by the Defense Communications Agency, Washington DC (1964-82), and U.S. Air Force, Washington DC (1982-86). He retired from Government service in 1986 as a member of the Senior Executive Service.
After retirement he traveled extensively with his wife, Barbara, in their motor home, visiting Alaska, the Canadian Maritimes and Mexico, and became active in the use of his computer as applied to genealogical research. In 1995 he was elected President of the ROOTS Users Group of Arlington, Virginia, which had over 600 members world-wide. He served two years in that position.
For several years Richard served as webmaster, established the Dewey Beach camera and acted as an advisor for The Town of Dewey.
Richard established the resident database, the online menu and, also, provided internet support for The Moorings at Lewes (formerly Cadbury).
He is survived by his son Jerome Cleaveland and wife Eileen, grandson Ryan Cleaveland and wife Dionna and granddaughter Rachel Hesse and husband Eric. His son Thomas Cleaveland, granddaughter Alyssa DeRonne and husband Christopher, grandson Thomas Cleaveland, granddaughter Amanda Guinan and husband Van, and 8 great-grandchildren. His brother John Cleaveland and wife Linda, his sister Christine Cleaveland MacBurney and husband Mike and his sister Leslie. A brother-in-law Robert Brooks, nieces Barbara Hartz, Margaret Phillips and husband Mike, and nephew Ronald Evans and wife Monique. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Jacqueline.
