Sixty years ago two teen aged boys joined the US Navy, met at school and visited the Lancaster USO. Their friendship with Richard and Claire Clausen evolved into a "Home away from Home" for Don and I. When I applied for a new car loan the bank would not give a resident of Minnesota a loan without a local resident's cosignatory. Dick and Claire did this for me. I purchased the vehicle from France and it arrived I was at sea. Dick went to the sea port and drove the car to his home. In the 60's the Clausen's drove their MG to the mid west stopping to visit with Don's family and my parents in Minnesota. Until last week I never knew that Richard served in the U. S. Marine Corp. The Marines motto is "Never leave a fallen soldier behind". Dick enhanced his motto to "Never leave a fallen person behind". Dick was an honorable generous man that worked tirelessly to provide assistance to anyone that needed help. In his obituary the family suggests contributions to the Delaware Hospice. Dick was a genuinely good person and made a lasting impression on this young sailor. Dick will truly be missed!

Rick,
Sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. I remember having lunch with your mom and dad when we worked together at A B Rote.
He was a nice man to talk to.

Dear Claire, We are so sorry to hear about Dick. Our sincere sympathy. Would love to hear from you. Our phone number is 717-285-5754. Jake and Jean Otthofer
I first met Dick and Claire at the Lancaster USO while attending training at the Bainbridge, Maryland Navy base in 1958. I and a Navy buddy would hitch hike to Lancaster every weekend to go to the USO to dance and have a good time. Dick and Claire were hosts and they became very good friends and eventually invited us to stay at their home, Even following our graduation at Bainbridge and assignment to ships, my buddy and I would hitch hike from our home port whenever possible for several years to come. My friendship with Dick and Claire continued to grow and eventually it included my wife and our parents. My wife and I went to visit Dick and Claire, many times, for years, including trips from out home in Eureka, Missouri, to Rehoboth Beach.
I remember riding in Dicks MG and how proud of it he was. Then in September 1960, while my ship was in the Mediterranean Sea, Rick, their son was born and how delighted they were with him. I remember Dick's work shop and model railroad. He was a skilled wood worker and proud of his workshop. We talked often about his service in the Marines and his duty on a small island in the Pacific. He was proud to serve and flew the american flag and the marine flag as often as he was able to do it. It was fun to share Dick's friends when they would play a game called "3 coin". We will miss Dick very much.
Dick is fondly remembered as a true friend, always available to help with house repairs, home security for absent neighbors, good talks and response to requested advice. He was always positive and a joy to be around. He will be missed but never forgotten.

I met Dick many years ago at the model railroad club in Lancaster. He was a good friend and was always generous sharing his time and knowledge. I will always remember my visits with Dick and Claire at their homes in Lancaster and Rehoboth, where I always felt welcome and enjoyed many good meals. My 3 children fondly remember our visits to Rehoboth when they were young and they are also sad to hear of his passing. We will miss him.
