Ralph Rittenhouse Umsted, Jr.'s Obituary
Ralph Rittenhouse Umsted, Jr., age 79, of Lewes, DE passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016, at his home in Lewes, DE. He was born Saturday, October 31, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA, to Ralph R. Umsted, Sr. and Elizabeth (Frazer) Umsted.
Mr. Umsted moved to Lewes four years ago from Wayne, PA. He attended Haverford High School in Haverford, PA, class of 1955. He then graduated from Mercersburg Academy in Chambersburg, PA. He was a 1960 graduate of Florida Southern College with his BS in accounting. In college he met the love of his life, Christena, whom he would marry in 1961.
Mr. Umsted served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. Following active service he continued in the Reserves and started his career with the Philadelphia Electric Company from which he retired in 1994 as Commercial Sales Manager. He would then open and operate his own antiques store, Old Forest Antiques, and was certified in personal property appraising.
Mr. Umsted was a member of the Sons of the Revolution, Professional Ski Instructors of America, the Delaware Seaside Model Train Club, the Train Collectors of America Club, the Military Officers Association of America and he was a member of the Georgetown Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Umsted was preceded in death by his grandson, Henry Umsted. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Christena (Parker) Umsted, of Lewes, DE; his son, Chip Umsted and his wife, Anna, of Berwyn, PA; his two daughters: Beth Bowersock and her husband, Ron, of Wilmington, DE and Christy Kinsman and her companion, Chas Abate, of New Canaan, CT; eleven grandchildren: Parker Umsted and his companion, Jalene Cherkauskas, Brennan Umsted, Katie Umsted, Connor Umsted, Lenora Umsted, Emeline Umsted, William Umsted, Isla Umsted, Brian Bowersock, Alex Kinsman, and Campbell Kinsman.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Georgetown Presbyterian Church, 03 North Bedford Street, Georgetown, DE. Interment will be private.
