Phyllis Jane Schultz's Obituary
Phyllis Jane Schultz, age 90 of Rehoboth Beach, DE passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at Beebe Healthcare, in Lewes, DE. She was born on November 4, 1928 in Iona, NJ, daughter of the late Claude and Marion (Newcomb) Blacknell.
Phyllis attended Jules Mastbaum Vocational School in Philadelphia. She began her career as a teletypist for Western Union and later retired from working as the secretary to the head of nurses at the Delaware Division Medical Center in Wilmington, DE. Phyllis married her late husband, Richard Schultz in 1954. They lived in Wilmington, DE and raised two children. She loved the beach and moved with Richard to Lewes, Delaware in 1990. They were able to enjoy many winters in Cocoa Beach, Florida, as well. Phyllis’ four grandchildren grew up near Delaware Beaches and she was able to be very present in their young lives. She was always independent, social and active, enjoying square dancing with the Whirlaways Club, playing bridge and attending Bethel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Mary Martha Circle. Phyllis’s four young, great-granddaughters kept her vibrant and energetic. She found pleasure in dining with friends, reading books, drinking tea, shopping, and travel. Phyllis was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend; a classy and beautiful woman who liked butterflies and was attracted to flying; a magnificent soul who will be dearly missed.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Schultz; and her brother, William Blacknell. She is survived by her son, Richard Schultz of Hudson, NY; her daughter, Claudia Monroe (Burr) of Millsboro, DE; her grandchildren: Shaun Monroe, Burr Monroe, Jr. (Kaitlin), Christina Monroe-Brown (Bryan), and Sylvia Parsons (David); her great-granddaughters: Vida Monroe, Sora Monroe, Florence Monroe-Brown, and Frances Monroe-Brown; and her 2 nieces and 1 nephew.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 3:00 PM at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE, where friends may visit beginning at 2:00 PM. Phyllis will be laid to rest privately with her husband at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
