Peggy O'Neil Slade's Obituary
Dorothy M. "Peggy" O'Neil Slade, 93 of Rehoboth Beach, DE passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE after a short illness.
Born Saturday, August 12, 1916 in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Snetsinger) O'Neil. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Laurence E. Slade, two brothers, Bill and Edwin O'Neil and one sister, Leonora Brady.
Peggy immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1948 and was a resident of Rehoboth Beach for more than three decades, having bought an oak-shaded house within earshot of the ocean as a weekend getaway, which later became her retirement home.
Before moving permanently to Rehoboth Beach, she was employed by the Chicago Daily News (CDN), Washington DC bureau as a research reporter and then office manager. She worked with several generations of CDN correspondents, both visiting and resident; her well-regarded boss was the renowned journalist Peter M. Lisagor. She was an intelligent and astute colleague who was held in high esteem by prestigious correspondents from around the world and many highly-placed government officials whom she knew both professionally and socially.
After moving to Rehoboth Beach, Peggy became an active member of St. Edmond's Roman Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, on the Parish Council, and assisting with the weekly caring of the altar linens. Peggy was also active in the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society.
Peggy is survived by one sister, Elayne Webster of Mallorytown, Ontario, Canada and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St Edmond's Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Street, Rehoboth Beach, DE with the Rev. Raymond Forester officiating. Friends may call at the church beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Rehoboth Beach, DE. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
Family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Edmond's Catholic Church at the above address.
